Gender Equality at the Heart of Global Progress: A Renewed Commitment from the High-Level Forum

Introduction

As an independent inspection body, PINO Switzerland – Professional International Norms Organization College – closely follows global developments that shape the way fairness, quality, and inclusion are measured. One of the most important issues of our time is Sustainable Development Goal 5: achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. This week, a significant step was taken on the world stage to reinforce that commitment.

A Pivotal Moment: Ministerial Declaration at the High-Level Political Forum

During the recent High-Level Political Forum, government representatives from around the globe adopted a renewed declaration that places gender equality at the very core of sustainable development. It was not simply a symbolic gesture; it was a clear call to accelerate action.

The declaration emphasized that achieving true equality is essential for progress across all areas of life. It urged immediate steps to eliminate gender-based violence, end harmful practices such as child marriage, and ensure that women and girls have equal access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities for leadership.

The Reality: Progress and Challenges

There have been improvements over the past decade—more women in leadership positions, stronger legal protections, and better awareness of gender-based discrimination. However, the pace of change remains far too slow.

Current projections show that global gender parity in political representation might not be reached for decades, and millions of women and girls still face systemic barriers that keep them from reaching their potential. Without stronger action, the promise of equality by 2030 will remain out of reach.

PINO Switzerland’s Perspective as an Inspection Body

For PINO Switzerland, gender equality is not just a principle—it is a measurable quality standard that must be embedded into every inspection and certification process. We assess whether organizations have:

  1. Robust Legal Frameworks – Clear and enforceable rules that prohibit discrimination.

  2. Equal Representation – Genuine participation of women in leadership, not token appointments.

  3. Protection from Harm – Systems in place to prevent violence and harmful practices, with proven effectiveness.

  4. Access to Opportunities – Equal access to education, skills training, and economic resources, especially for those in underserved communities.

  5. Accountability Mechanisms – Transparent monitoring to ensure commitments are turned into results.

Why This Matters for Voluntary Certification

As a private and independent inspection body, we often work with organizations that operate under voluntary standards. In these cases, embedding gender equality into certification criteria is vital. Voluntary compliance must be more than a statement—it must be backed by evidence, measurable results, and continuous improvement.

When gender equality is treated as a core quality standard, it strengthens the credibility of the certification and demonstrates that fairness is more than a slogan.

Moving Forward

The declaration adopted this week is more than an international agreement—it is a reminder that time is short, and the work ahead is urgent. The next few years will be critical in deciding whether gender equality becomes a reality or remains an aspiration.

At PINO Switzerland, we see this as a moment to strengthen our own inspection processes, to encourage gender-responsive governance, and to push for measurable outcomes in every system we evaluate. Achieving equality is not just about fairness—it is about ensuring that every inspection, every certification, and every standard we uphold reflects the values of inclusion and respect for all.
